With his Compressioni project, Paolo Ulian has conceived a new way of forming sheet metal, a method that reveals uncanny expressivity. Composed of a basket, a centrepiece and an "unprecedented object", his triad of objects is a powerful encapsulation of the experiments he entertained with a master turner at his side. The three containers are first made on a lathe, then compressed to obtain the final shape. Trial after trial, it became clear that the deformations caused by crushing the semifinished articles were relatively controllable variables. The folds created on the bottom of the objects were almost magically arranged in geometric patterns – squares, pentagons, hexagons and octagons – giving fascinating regularity to the elements' unique differences.

Sebastian G. ★★★★★

I’ve never seen sheet metal treated like fabric before—the basket’s folds look almost soft, and the centrepiece holds fruit without hiding it. It’s more sculpture than kitchen tool, but that’s exactly why I keep it out on the counter.

Michael K. ★★★★★

The way the sheet metal is formed into these pieces has this almost organic, flowing look I wasn't expecting. I keep the centrepiece on the table every day now, and it sparks conversation whenever guests see it.

Sebastian ★★★★★

The basket and centrepiece sit together so naturally that the whole thing feels like one continuous gesture, not three separate parts. I keep moving it around the table just to watch how the sheet metal holds its shape—it's genuinely uncanny in person.
